She’s released three highly acclaimed solo albums, Caoir, Dùsgadh and Faileasan and also, Dithis; a duo album with her brother Andrew. Joy was also the driving force between ‘Gaelic/Gaeilge supergroup’, LAS and has featured on a range of collaborative albums.

A popular television & radio broadcaster, Joy is involved with a wide range of music, current affairs and light entertainment programmes. With her trademark poise and depth of knowledge, Joy’s warmth and enthusiasm have made her increasing in-demand in television and radio broadcasts alike; from presenting the weather on both BBC Scotland & BBC Alba, to fronting SpeakGaelic; a wide-ranging, multi-faceted learning brand, offering the most comprehensive approach to learning Scottish Gaelic in a generation. She also presents the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year competition and co-hosts Fonn, a bilingual BBC/RTE contemporary music radio programme. Joy is also the creator and co-host of the popular Scottish Gaelic and Irish podcast ‘A-nunn ’s Anall’.

A fluent Gaelic speaker, with an honours degree in Gaelic Language and Culture, Joy has taught Gaelic language and song courses across the globe and in her spare time, she also conducts the Alba Choir; Scotland’s first and only Eurovision entry, who participated in the 2019 Eurovision Choir of the Year finals in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Caoir

“Joy’s pure, enthralling vocals burn brightest at the heart of it all, acting as the ember which breathes life to the skilled, heartfelt flames of musicianship that surround her on the recording.”

“A bigger and bolder sound than ever before.”

“It’s easy to imagine the album’s sparkling tracks lighting a fire in listeners as Joy’s musical embers dance around venues and festivals across Scotland and beyond.”

Esteemed Scottish singer, broadcaster and Gaelic language advocate Joy Dunlop releases her third solo album Caoir, featuring contemporary recordings of traditional Gaelic songs.

Caoir (pronounced koor) means a blaze of fire, fiercely burning, flames or flashes – imagery which comes across in the album’s undeniably vibrant and warming sound. Her pure, enthralling vocals burn brightest at the heart of it all, acting as the ember which breathes life to the skilled, heartfelt flames of musicianship that surround her on the recording.

With its upbeat rhythms and captivating melodies and riffs, it’s easy to imagine the album’s sparkling tracks lighting a fire in listeners as Joy’s musical embers dance around venues and festivals across Scotland and beyond.

Isle of Coll - Joy Dunlop Trio

    7.30pm

    An Cridhe, Isle of Coll,

With an exquisitely expressive voice and a deep connection to the Scottish Highlands, Joy Dunlop is one of today’s foremost Scottish Gaelic and World Music singers. A vocalist renowned for her ability to breathe new life into the most traditional material, Joy translates ancient Gaelic musical traditions into the twenty-first century with elegance and grace. The emotional power of her singing needs no translation, speaking to audiences across the divides of language and history, in a voice as luminous and compelling as her native Argyll. Her dynamic trio, featuring Joy (vocals/stepdance), Ron Jappy (guitar) and Mhairi Marwick (fiddle), explores Scotland’s cultural links through exhilarating music and dance collaborations, interspersed with breathtaking songs in Scotland’s native language, Scottish Galidhlig. The result is music deeply rooted in Scottish authenticity and tradition, yet infused with the energy and vigour of a new generation.

Edinburgh TradFest - Rebellious Truth 25

    2pm

EDINBURGH TRADFEST: REBELLIOUS TRUTH 25: JOY DUNLOP + FRASER FIFIELD

    https://www.traverse.co.uk/whats-on/event/edinburgh-tradfest-rebellious-truth-25-joy-dunlop-fraser-fifield-spring-25

Brought up in an English speaking household in Connel, Argyll, Joy Dunlop was introduced to Scottish Gaelic at nine years old, when the Royal National Mòd was held in Oban. This performing opportunity grew into a love for Gaelic singing and an unexpected foray into Gaelic immersion learning that changed the course of her life completely.

No word of a lie, up until that moment the young Joy had been planning to pursue a career in medicine. This volte-face resulted in her studying at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig (the Gaelic college on Skye), competing in the Royal National Mòd (it took her four years of entering to secure the coveted gold medal) and becoming the passionate advocate for her Gaelic language and culture she is today.

The talk will give insight into her own Gaelic journey; from learning Gaelic songs phonetically, to being the face of multi-platform learning brand, SpeakGaelic. Joy will discuss her journey to fluency, and both the opportunities and challenges that she encountered on the way.

Today Joy is known as a Gaelic singer, broadcaster and Scottish step-dancer. With her trademark poise and depth of knowledge, Joy’s warmth and enthusiasm have made her increasing in-demand in television and radio broadcasts alike; from presenting the weather on both BBC Scotland and BBC Alba to hosting the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year.

As a fluent Gaelic speaker, with an honours degree in Gaelic Language and Culture, audiences are often surprised to learn that she is did not grow up with the language at home. For anyone who has considered learning Gaelic (or any other language) she is the perfect role model.

The event will also include a smattering of music from Joy, and special set by University of Edinburgh Traditional Artist in Residence, in Celtic and Scottish Studies, Fraser Fifield.

You can attend in person at The Traverse or join us online on the day. Livestream link will be announced nearer the time.

Grandfather Mountain Gaelic Song and Language Week

    All day

    Lees-McRae College, Banner Elk, NC

    https://acgamerica.org/grandfather-mountain/

The Grandfather Mountain Gaelic Song and Language Week will be located at Lees-McRae College, in Banner Elk, NC, in what is known as the “high country.” It is roughly half an hour’s drive from Grandfather Mountain where the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games are held every year the second weekend in July (immediately after the Gaelic Song and Language Week). The nearest airports are Tri-Cities Airport near Blountville, TN and Charlotte International Airport, at Charlotte, NC.

Come to the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, a state where Gaelic was still spoken at the end of the nineteenth century. Enjoy language classes for beginner, intermediate, and advanced Gaelic speakers and singing classes covering a range of traditional Gaelic song forms, including waulking or milling songs and mouth music. Scottish Gaelic Language classes for beginner, intermediate, and advanced speakers will be offered.

The week will consist of language and song classes at graduated levels. Other activities will include a cèilidh, a silent auction, viewing Gaelic videos (if any are brought), and hikes in the beautiful surrounding mountains (if you choose). The workshop ends just as the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games are getting underway at MacRae Meadows on Grandfather Mountain. As usual there will be a Gaelic Tent at the games, and the North Carolina Gaelic Mòd will take place there on the Saturday.
